F.A.Q.s

Who bakes all the delicious treats you offer? Who creates all of the great fondant cakes?

Paulette is our head baker, and created each recipe we offer. She bakes every cupcake, cake, scone, cookie, and specialty item we sell. One day each week, Chelsea steps in as an assistant baker to give Paulette a much needed day off. The rest of the time, Chelsea heads up the production of the amazing frostings that top our delicious cupcakes and cakes. Brittany is our ingredient wizard, and oversees the preparation of our recipes for daily baking. She also works her magic on our fondant creations, including the adorable 3D figurines that grace the top of some of our cakes. Casey joined the team in 2010, lending his incredible artistic talent to LTEC creations. He oversees the creation of custom cakes from the inception of our customer's vision to the breathtaking end product. Working as an amazing team, and a pretty awesome family, these four constitute Let Them Eat Cake!

I want a cake with a character from a movie/TV show/comic book/Disney theme. Why can't you make it?

Images, such as those on TV, in comic books, etc., are copyrighted. We cannot, by law, recreate these images. Please read below for copyright information.

What is Copyright?

Copyright is a set of exclusive rights regulating the use of a particular expression of an idea or information. In cake decorating, it refers to the use of an image, item, or character that is not the original creation of the decorator.

The following cannot be made for sale:

* Cakes that recreate a character from any movie, tv, cartoon, video game, or media/musical act or property. (examples: Dora, SpongeBob, High School Musical, Super Mario)

* Cakes that copy an image from a napkin/plate/invitation that was purchased from a store. (examples: anything purchased from American Greetings, Party City, or Hallmark)

* Cakes which reproduce purses, shoes, or items from a designer (example, a handbag cake is ok to sell, but if it looks like a Louis Vuitton handbag, it would then be illegal)

Is it ok to buy toys from the store and put them on a cake for sale?

No, it's not. Almost all candles, toys, edible images, and toppers you can buy at retail stores are for home use only and can not be used for profit* This includes Barbie dolls for use in doll cakes, or an action figure being laid on top of a cake.

*There is an exception. If the customer purchases the item at the store, then gives us the item to use on the cake, then it comes under home use and therefore is legal for us to use.

As a side-note, fines for copyright violation can go as high as $150,000; if we violate the law, we are vulnerable.

Do you offer vegan cupcakes?

Yes, we do! We bake one vegan flavor on Mondays, and one on Fridays. As the demand for vegan options grows, we will add more flavors to our weekly rotation.

What is in your cupcakes?

We get asked this question a lot! While we won’t give out our recipes (you’d have to be a member of the family for that!), we can tell you that we bake all of our creations from scratch using only the finest ingredients. We never use shortening in our cupcakes or frostings, and using artificial flavors would never cross our minds! We use real butter, real fruits, and pure vanilla. We even go a step further in using baking powder that does not contain aluminum (sure, it is more expensive, but who wants metal in their cupcake?).  In fact, only one of our cupcakes contains an artificial ingredient, and that is our version of Red Velvet which contains red coloring.

Your cupcakes seem smaller than the “other guy’s”, what’s the deal with that?

The truth is, cupcake pans and papers come in one standard size (with the exception of those ginormous “Costco” size creations), and those are what we all use. So, while our cupcakes aren’t really smaller than the “other guy’s”, the fact that we use all natural ingredients might make some of them seem smaller. Unlike “other guys”, we don’t use things that “inflate” our cupcakes - like shortening and excess leavening.

Do you make gluten-free cupcakes?

Yes, we do. However, we currently only offer GF by special order with a one dozen minimum. Please call or visit for available flavors.

Do you sell day old cupcakes?

No. All of our cupcakes are baked fresh every morning and sold only that day. If we have any remaining at the end of the day, they are donated to a local shelter.

Do you ship your cupcakes?

Unfortunately, no. The only way to enjoy our fabulous cupcakes (for now) is to visit us in person.

Do you deliver?

Yes, we do! For a small fee we can deliver in Davis, or to nearby locations. Our delivery fee is just $4 within Davis, and $1/mile RT for deliveries outside Davis. A one dozen, or $30, minimum order is required for delivery.

Some of your flavors contain alcohol. Isn’t that dangerous?

Some of our flavors do contain alcohol or liqueurs, but they are completely harmless. Alcohol evaporates at 173° F, and since we bake our cupcakes at a much higher temperature the only thing that remains is the flavor. In fact, the vanilla we use contains a higher alcohol content!

$2.75 seems kind of pricey for a cupcake. Why are they so expensive?

Believe it or not, we really did our research when it came to pricing our product. The big name cupcake bakeries charge from $3.25 to $4.00 each, and $36 per dozen, for their cupcakes. Other local cupcake places charge from $2.50 - $2.75 each (one charges $3.00 each for "premium" flavors), and $30 per dozen. We priced our cupcakes to not only be competitive, but also to account for our premium ingredients. However, we stopped short of charging our customers extra if we choose to use $30 cognac in one of our cupcakes. Our customers deserve the best, and we promise they'll get it at a fair price!

Why can't I find your menu online?

Don't get us wrong, the web is a great place (after all, you wouldn't be here without it!) but it is also an open invitation for the imitation of great things and ideas. We worked long and hard developing our menu and recipes, and while imitation is said to be the greatest form of flattery, we want to stay unique. So, you won't find our menu online, but you can give us a call, drop us an email, or stop by the bakery and we'd be happy to get one to you!
